Harald Krumpöck

Conductor

Harald Krumpöck

Harald Krumpöck hails from a family of musicians, with several relatives being past and present members of Vienna's two premier orchestras, the Wiener Philharmoniker and the Wiener Symphoniker. He began studying the violin at a very early age under the tutelage of Heide Auersperg, Michael Schnitzler, Gerhart Hetzel, and Alfred Staar. In 1986, he received a scholarship from the Eastern Music Festival in Greensboro, NC, USA, where he continued his studies with Joseph Gingold. Krumpöck has garnered multiple awards in national Austrian competitions and, in 1994, secured the 1st prize at the International Brahms Competition in Pörtschach.

In 1988, he served as concertmaster for the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra under Claudio Abbado's direction. By 1993, he joined the orchestra of the Vienna State Opera and, in 1996, became a member of the Wiener Philharmoniker, extending his membership to the Wiener Hofmusikkapelle in 2006.

As a soloist, Harald Krumpöck has performed across Austria, Germany, Hungary, Spain, Portugal, Russia, and Japan. His dedication to chamber music is evident through his involvement with several ensembles, including the Seifert Quartett Wien and the Ensemble Kontrapunkte. He has collaborated with renowned artists like Rudolf Buchbinder, Lang Lang, Christopher Hinterhuber, Milan Turkovic, Matthias Schorn, Rainer Honeck, Volkhard Steude, Gustav Rivinius, and Franz Bartolomey.

Krumpöck is also deeply invested in initiatives that aim to make classical music more accessible to younger audiences. In 2016, he initiated the bePhilharmonic competition for young amateur musicians, which, in collaboration with the ORF (Austrian Broadcasting Corporation), garnered significant media attention. In 2020, he co-founded the Camerata Prima Wien, a youth orchestra comprising exclusively of Austrian national competition prize-winners.

Increasingly channeling his musical energies into conducting, this transition seems a natural progression for his versatile musical persona. Beyond his work with the Camerata Prima Wien, he has conducted orchestras in Austria, Romania, Russia, and Belgium. His ongoing collaboration with the Vienna Chamber Orchestra culminated in his conducting debut at the Vienna Konzerthaus in 2023, with a debut at the Vienna Musikverein scheduled for 2024.
